Email Segmentation
Sending different things to different people: behavioural, demographic, engagement and RFM segments, plus the mistakes that make segmentation cost more than it returns.
Segmentation has a cost that gets left out of the case for it: every segment is another version of the email that somebody has to write, check and maintain. Splitting a list into eight groups you cannot resource is worse than sending one good email to all of them.
The guides here are ordered by return per unit of effort. Engagement segmentation pays for itself almost immediately and protects deliverability. Demographic segmentation is the one most often built first and most often abandoned, and the guide explains why.

- 01 Email Segmentation Strategy: From Basic to Advanced A staged plan that adds one segment at a time, with the maintenance cost of each stated up front.
- 02 Behavioral Segmentation: Targeting Based on Actions The actions worth segmenting on, the ones that are noise, and how far back the window should reach.
- 03 Demographic Segmentation: Age, Location, and Beyond The demographic splits that change what you send, and why most collected demographic data never gets used.
- 04 Purchase History Segmentation: Targeting Buyers and Browsers Splitting on what someone bought, how recently, and how often — plus the one-purchase group most senders mishandle.
- 05 Engagement-Based Segments: Active, Lapsed, and At-Risk The split that protects deliverability, with concrete thresholds and what to send each tier.
- 06 Lead Source Segmentation: Tailoring by Acquisition Channel Tagging where someone came from, why it has to happen at capture, and what it lets you do six months later.
- 07 Survey and Quiz Segmentation: Self-Declared Preferences Asking people to sort themselves, the response rates to expect, and the gap between declared and actual behaviour.
- 08 RFM Segmentation for Email: Recency, Frequency, Monetary The scoring model, how to set the bands for your data, and the eleven segments it produces.
- 09 Dynamic Segmentation: Real-Time List Updates Segments that recalculate themselves, where they beat static lists, and the timing bug that sends the wrong email.
- 10 Segmentation Mistakes: Common Errors That Hurt Performance Nine errors, what each one looks like in the data, and the fix for each.
